Today is an important day across the pond, as the USA celebrates Independence Day – so we wish a very happy 4th July to our American friends and followers!
Back in Blighty, today also marks the beginning of a month of celebrating UK Independent Retailers (hence the cheesy link!)
We are always hearing bad news about the British High Street… it’s in trouble, supermarkets have taken over, there’s no choice any more, people miss the butchers and grocers they grew up with, it’s all doom and gloom, etc. On the other hand, there’s a lot to celebrate! There are many great local independent food shops out there, who are passionate about food, care about what they sell and work hard to earn their place on the high street in an incredibly competitive environment.
So here’s an idea… why not Go Local for July and make yourself a little promise to do some of your food shopping at local independent food shops? If you don’t know any off the top of your head, you can use on-line directories to find them (see our blog on local food to get you started).
If we want to improve our High Streets and have more sustainable and ethical alternatives to supermarkets, it’s up to all of us to do our bit to keep independent retailers going. That’s why Go Local is one of the hiSbe‘s 8 Everyday Choices.
