Javier Lozano Barragán was a Mexican Cardinal and Emeritus President who died on April 20, 2022.
In 1955, while in Rome, Barragán was ordained as a priest. When he returned to Mexico, he taught Dogmatic Theology at the Zamora diocesan seminary.
In the 1970s, he was president of the Mexican Theological Society and head of the Latin American Bishops’ Conference’s Theological Pastoral Institute (CELAM).
He was the head of the Roman Catholic Church’s Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers and retired at age 76.
For more than a decade, he was a vocal opponent of abortion and euthanasia.
According to Vatican News, he received his first communion at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
He was 89.
