Cori “Coco” Gauff is an American professional tennis player. She has a career-high ranking of world No. 11 in singles, reached on July 11, 2022, and No. 1 in doubles, achieved on August 15, 2022.
Is Coco Gauff playing in the 2022 US Open Tennis?
At the 2022 US Open, Coco Gauff’s sure to be a headlining act. But at the moment, the 18-year-old American is the featured star in ESPN’s Cover Story, which debuts on ESPN’s SportsCenter and digital channels this week.
In a lengthy in-depth feature that interviews Gauff and her parents Corey and Candi about her tennis career to date and her dreams and ambitions, this born-and-bred Floridian says she loves New York.
“It’s my favourite Slam,” Gauff tells reporter Alyssa Roenigk. “Playing in front of the home crowd. I hope I can win in front of them.”
The writer then recounts that Gauff says this, after a pause: “That’s the goal, but we’ll see. I know one day I’ll hold the trophy there.”
Gauff is primed for her fourth US Open main draw appearance and looks to better the third-round showing she recorded in 2019. Last year, she lost in the second round in singles and reached the doubles final with compatriot Caty McNally.
In the piece, Gauff also says that she’s hoping to have the opportunity to play a legend under New York’s brightest lights. After beating Venus Williams at Wimbledon three years ago, Gauff says she hopes to have the opportunity to face Serena Williams before the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion says goodbye to tennis for good.
“I always wanted to play them, but I thought they’d be gone before I got on tour,” Gauff said. “Did I think I could win that [Wimbledon] match? No. Because of Serena, Venus, Serena, Venus. All the time, in my head.”
On the possibility of playing Serena at the US Open, she adds: “I’m hoping my draw can work out,” she said, “so we play each other.”
