Gail Halvorsen, aka the Candy Bomber or Uncle Wiggly Wings, has died at the age of 101 on February 16, 2022. During the Cold War, Gail Halvorsen was a Lieutenant in the American Air Force.

And he came up with the idea to drop chocolates and other sweets from planes unto the famished and ragged children in West Berlin.

Of course, the dropping of candy was a minor part of a more ambitious plan to feed the entire population of West Berlin who had been blockaded by the Soviets in an attempt to force out the Americans and English from a Soviet-occupied enclave.

But, this little gesture which he started on his candy rations would soon spread among the other pilots.

At a time when there was so much destruction and death, dropping sweets instead of bombs was unique and showed humans still could be counted on.

Gail was born and raised in Salt Lake City to Basel K and Luella Spencer Halvorsen. He lived on small farms around the Utah area and graduated from Bear River High School and proceeded to the University of Utah, but his studies there were only brief.

After the U.S. joined W.W.2. after the Pearl Harbour attacks, Halvorsen trained as a pilot and worked as a transport pilot during the war.
