Jimmie Lou Fisher was one of the state’s longest-serving constitutional offices and the first female major-party contender for Arkansas governor has died.

Fisher began her political career as Greene County treasurer in 1970, but her relationship and partnership with young Bill Clinton during his congressional race in 1974 launched her state political career.

Fisher, a Paragould resident, was 81 years old

She was married to George Fisher during her lifetime.

Her spouse was a quiet man who loved his people and was willing to make significant sacrifices to support her aspirations.

Her final campaign came in 2002 when Democratic Party officials persuaded her to run for governor against popular Republican governor Mike Huckabee, who was seeking re-election for a second full term.

Many political experts saw this as the most important boost to McDaniel’s candidacy, much more significant than the support of hundreds of past Arkansas State Bar Association presidents, reflecting Fisher’s popularity among Democrats in the state.

Funeral plans have not yet been made public.
