Joël Matip is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Premier League club Liverpool.

Joel Matip was born in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia to a German mother and former Cameroonian father, Jean Matip.

His father, Jean Matip is a former footballer. Together, his parents had three children; Marvin, Rebecca, and Joel.

Like his younger brother, Marvin Matip has football in his blood. However, Marvin is a former professional football player who played as a center-back.

Despite being born in Germany, he represented the Cameroon national team at international level. He has also represented German youth sides at the Under 19 and Under-21 levels in competitions.

These competitions include the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship and the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.

Marvin has played with VfL Bochum, 1. FC Köln and  Karlsruher SC.
