American lawyer and politician Harry Reid has died, aged 82.

The former Senate Majority Leader who served as the United States Senator from Nevada from 1987 to 2017 passed away on Tuesday, December 28, his family confirmed.

Harry Reid died after a “four-year battle with pancreatic cancer,” his family revealed in a statement on Tuesday.

“We are so proud of the legacy he leaves behind both on the national stage and his beloved Nevada,” his wife, Landra Reid, said in a statement.

“Harry was deeply touched to see his decades of service to Nevada honored in recent weeks with the renaming of Las Vegas’ airport in his honor,” it added.

Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has said Reid was one of the most amazing individuals he had ever met. He revealed this in a tweet.

“He never forgot where he came from and used those boxing instincts to fearlessly fight those who were hurting the poor & the middle class. He’s gone but will walk by the sides of many of us in the Senate every day,” he tweeted.

Harry Reid was on December 2, 1939, in Searchlight, Nevada, United States.

His father Harry Vincent Reid was a rock miner and his mother, Inez Orena Reid, did laundry for the brothels and casinos.

Despite his family background, Harry Reid rose to become one of the most powerful Democrats in Senate history.
