Philip D. Beidler was a longstanding English professor at the University of Alabama who died on Wednesday, April 21, 2022.
Beidler was conscripted while an undergraduate student at Davidson College in North Carolina and went to Vietnam in 1969 as a lieutenant in the 17th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Troop D, which was part of the 199th Light Infantry Brigade.
He had been a professor at the University for more than 40 years.
Having arrived in 1974 after obtaining his doctoral degree from the University of Virginia, he remained there until his retirement in 2019.
His own experiences in the Vietnam War inspired multiple volumes of literature and art at the time.
Beidler, known as Phil remained as professor emeritus in the department.
