Jack McKinney was American NBA coach who died on September 25, 2018.
McKinney attended Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia for his undergraduate studies.
He played three seasons with the Hawks, who were also coached by Dr. Jack Ramsay.
He led the team to the Big 5’s first championship and the school’s first playoff appearance in the 1956 National Invitation Tournament.
In 1979–80, he was hired as the Lakers’ head coach for the first time. Jerry Buss, the team’s new owner, wanted the games to be exciting, so he hired the coach to implement a rushing attack.
McKinney sustained a near-fatal head injury while riding and that brough his days at the Lakers to a sad end.
McKinney co-wrote a book on his experiences at Saint Joseph’s in 2005 and gave 10% of the earnings to the school.
He was 83.
