Sara Lynn Evans was born in February 1971 in Boonville, Missouri. Sara began singing in her family’s band when she was five years old.

She was hit by a car when she was eight years old and had to recover in a wheelchair.

When she was 16, she landed a two-year job in a nightclub. She relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1991. In 1997, she signed with RCA Nashville and released her debut album, Three Chords and the Truth.

She had success with the title track from her 1998 album No Place That Far. The album received a Gold certification. Born to Fly, her third album was released in 2000.

The title track peaked at number one on the Hot Country Songs list. Born to Fly received a double-platinum certification. In 2001, she received the Video of the Year award and was nominated for six additional awards by the Country Music Association.

In 2006, she became the first country music artist to compete on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. She and her ex-husband, Schelske, have three children.

She married Jay Barker in 2008 but the couple are currently separated.
