After his graduation from high school, he attended Truman State University in 1993.

During his time there, he was a member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity and played football and baseball. In addition, he was a founding member of Truman’s Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Four years later, in 1997, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in political science. He later attended the Saint Louis University School of Law, after receiving a scholarship.

There, he earned his Juris Doctor in 2000. After this, in the same year, he was admitted to the Missouri bar and was later a partner at the firm Lathrop & Gage, LLP in Clayton, Missouri.
