Pakistani vocalist, music composer and producer Arooj Aftab has been nominated in two categories by the Recording Academy for the 2022 Grammy.
The Brooklyn-based singer grabbed nominations for her 2021 hit single “Mohabbat” – which appeared on former President Barack Obama’s 2021 summer playlist.
Her song got her listed in the “Best Global Music Performance” and will compete with Angelique Kidjo and Burna Boy’s “Do Yourself,” Femi Kuti’s “Pà Pá Pà,” Yo-Yo Ma and Angelique Kidjo’s “Blewu,” and Wizkid’s “Essence” (feat. Tems).
She was also nominated for the “Best New Artist” – a tight category that will see her battle with Jimmie Allen, Baby Keem, Finneas, Glass Animals, Japanese Breakfast, The Kid Laroi, Arlo Parks, Olivia Rodrigo and Saweetie for the prestigious accolade.
“Mohabbat,” which has garnered over 600,000 YouTube views, was included on former President Barack Obama’s 2021 summer playlist. The song was self-produced by the singer and appears on her latest album, “Vulture Prince.”
This is not her first Grammy. A few weeks ago, she received a nod in the 2021 Latin Grammy Award as Vocalist on Residente’s “Antes Que El Mundo Se Acabe.”
