Two-time Golden Globe Awards and Grammy Award-winning actor Sidney Poitier has passed away. He died on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at the age of 94. He passed away in Los Angeles, California sometime after 7 pm on Thursday.

Actor and close friend to Poitier, Cedric Scott confirmed Friday morning. His death was also announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell.

Sir Poitier was the first Black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964 for his performance in ‘Lilies of the Field.’

Sidney Poitier was known for Hollywood films like Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, In the Heat of the Night, and Lilies of the Field, for which he became the first Black man to win a Best Actor Oscar.

He starred in three films that addressed the issue of race relations, To Sir, with Love, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night, which was directed by Norman Jewison in 1967.
