Thompson competed on the Hooters Tour in 2010 and was crowned Hooters Tour Player of the Year. Thompson finished tied for 16th in the 2010 PGA Tour Q-School, earning him a 2011 PGA Tour card.

From 1999 until 2003, Thompson attended University High School in Tucson, Arizona. He won the Class 4A state team title in 2003 and was awarded Arizona High School State Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003 while there. Thompson attended Tulane University for two seasons until the golf team was dissolved following Hurricane Katrina. Thompson went on to attend the University of Alabama. Thompson was the 2008 SEC Player of the Year while on the Alabama golf team.
