When he was four years old, his father died from pneumonia.
After his father’s death, his mother remarried an English merchant sailor named Allan Reeve, whom he considered his father since he did not get the chance to get to know his biological father.
He attended Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx. During this time, he delivered beer and mail, pushed garment racks, and cleaned silver in the basement of the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York City.
