Manny Ramirez is a former major league baseball player born in Santo Domingo on May 30th, 1972. He moved to Washington Heights, New York City, with his family when he was 13 years old.
Despite residing in New York City, Ramirez developed a passion for the Toronto Blue Jays. Manny attended high school but dropped out at the age of 19 without ever graduating. His high school baseball team was exclusively made up of Dominicans.
Manny was chosen in the first round of the Major league baseball draft by the Cleveland Indians in 1991.
He signed for a $250,000 signing bonus and began playing in the lower levels. After excelling throughout this time, he made his major league debut against the Minnesota Twins in 1993. He played in Major League Baseball for 19 seasons.
He played for the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, and Tampa Bay Rays, among others. He concluded the season with one in the ChineseProfessional Baseball League.
Ramirez earned a strong reputation as a batter throughout the course of his career, bringing both finesse and power to the plate. He hit nearly 500 home runs in his career, 21 grand slams, and 29 playoff home runs. Manny also has a 312 lifetime batting average and is largely regarded as one of the finest right-handed batters of his period.
Manny’s career, however, was not without controversy, as he was suspended in 2011 for breaching MLB’s drug rules. After then, he never played another game in the league.
He was also named an All-Star 12 times, mostly with the Red Sox. Ramirez also won the World Series twice while with the Red Sox.
