Steven Seagal is a well-known American actor who also has a 7th-dan black belt in aikido. In Japan, he began his career as an aikido instructor.

Success followed him all the way to Los Angeles, where he was cast in the film ‘Above the Law.’ He later appeared in other films, including ‘Under Siege,’ ‘On Deadly Ground,’ and ‘Under Siege 2: Dark Territory.’

He did not become an overnight success in Hollywood, but he did build a name for himself as a brilliant martial artist-cum-actor whose abilities were employed in martial arts films. He subsequently went on to feature in a series of low-budget direct-to-video films before returning to the big screen with ‘Machete’.

He is also an environmentalist, a proponent of animal rights, and a backer of the Tibetan independence cause.
