Before the 2012 season, Demarcus Lawrence transferred to Boise State University.
Lawrence enjoyed a breakout season in 2017 after returning to his natural position on the left side. Lawrence caused a fumble-off quarterback Trevor Siemian in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos on September 17, 2017. In the 42–17 defeat, the fumble helped set up the Cowboys’ touchdown drive.

Lawrence enrolled at Butler Community College in 2010 and redshirted. As a redshirt freshman in 2011, he led the team with 69 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks, while also receiving All-Jayhawk Conference and NJCAA All-America accolades.
Before the 2012 season, he transferred to Boise State University. He started all 11 games as a sophomore and led the team with 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.
