The tall list of Black women who contributed massively to the film industry in advocating and encouraging the involvement of women and people of color in the industry would be incomplete without the name of Michelle Materre.

Michelle Materre, an African-American television and film producer cum writer who was an associate professor of Media Studies and Film at The New School has passed on at 67.

Materre was also part of the board members of groups such as New York Women in Film and Television, Women Make Movies, and the International Youth Leadership Institution.

Some of the independent films which were released by Materre and her co-founded film distribution and marketing company were; Julie Dash’s “Daughters of the Dust,” which was entered into the Library of Congress National Library of Film in 2004.

Michelle Materre’s most popular and notable series were “Tell It Like It Is: Black Independents in New York” from 1968 to 1986”, and “One Way or Another: Black Women’s Cinema”, from 1970- to 1991, which was listed in The New Yorker as “The Most Important Repertory Series of 2017.”

Since 2000, Materre was the associate professor of media studies and film t the New School and later became the director of the Media Management Program.

She also became the director of Creative Strategies at the Institute for Race, Power, and Political Economy as well as the director of the Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students.

In 2015, Michelle Materre received the “Distinguished University Teaching Award” from The New School.
