Bill Ludwig OAM was a former union official and Labor powerbroker who died on April 11, 2022.
He was known as the AWU boss.
He began his career as a shearer in the 1950s and participated in the bitter 1956 shearers’ strike to fight when shearers and pastoralists clashed over wages and conditions.
After working in the sheep sector for two decades, Ludwig became an AWU organizer in the 1970s before becoming the South Western District Secretary.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palascczuk announced the ALP heavyweight’s death on social media.
In 1997, Ludwig was given the Medal of the Order of Australia for his contributions to industrial relations through the Australian Workers Union.
In appreciation of his contributions to Australian society, he was given the Centenary Medal in 2001.
He died at 84.
