Bobby O’Jay, one of Memphis radio’s most recognizable voices, has passed away.
The WDIA DJ and program director, who was inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, died at the age of 68.
The news was announced by WDIA’s parent company, iHeartRadio.
There was no mention of a cause of death.

Over the course of a six-decade career, O’Jay interviewed celebrities ranging from James Brown to Barry White, as well as politicians, preachers, and cops.
O’Jay, a native of Batesville, Mississippi, received his formal radio training at Milwaukee’s Institute of Broadcast Arts.
O’Jay began his career in radio in 1972, working at stations in Montgomery, Alabama, Milwaukee, Flint, Michigan, Chicago, Houston, and Dallas.
He moved to Memphis in 1974 and started working for WLOK-AM 1340. O’Jay joined the historic African-American station WDIA in 1983.
In 1949, WDIA became the first radio station in the United States dedicated solely to African-Americans.
