Casemiro will don the number 18 jersey for Manchester United, according to the club.
Prior to the 2-1 Premier League victory over Liverpool on Monday night, the 30-year-old was formally introduced to the club’s fans.
On Thursday, Casemiro participated in team training for the first time, and he is eligible to make his Premier League debut against Southampton on Saturday at St. Mary’s.
The midfielder’s prospective shirt number had been the subject of much rumor, but the club has now officially announced that he would don the number 18 for his new team.
“We can confirm that Casemiro will wear the no.18 shirt for Manchester United, following the completion of his transfer from Real Madrid,” read a statement on Man United’s official website.
When speaking to journalist Andy Mitten, Casemiro was all admiration for the club legend who memorably wore the number 18 for Manchester United.
“Well, there are many players,” he told Mitten when asked about his idols. “I think there are players that you remember in your life. So, in terms of idols in this position my idol growing up was always [Zinedine] Zidane, [but] here at Manchester United, it was always Paul Scholes.
After Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, and Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro is now Man United’s fourth summer acquisition. However, the team is still negotiating a significant financial agreement for Ajax forward Antony.
The Red Devils dropped their first two Premier League games to Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, but last time out, they defeated Liverpool at home to get back on track.
