What really happened between R. Kelly and Aaliyah?

Aaliyah, at 12 years old was introduced to R Kelly by her uncle Barry Hankerson.

After the release of Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, rumors were circulated about a possible relationship between the pair. During the recording of this album, the two reportedly developed an intimate relationship.

In 1993, a former backup performer said she walked in on them as they were engaged in a sexual act on his tour bus.

It was alleged that they got married without her parent’s consent. A marriage certificate released by Vibe magazine revealed that the couple married on August 31, 1994.

Aaliyah, who was 15 at the time, was listed as 18 on the certificate whereas Kelly was 27. According to Demetrius Smith Sr., Kelly’s former tour manager, Kelly married Aaliyah after she told him that she was pregnant.

The marriage was later annulled by her parents in 1995, though both Kelly and Aaliyah denied the allegations.

Later, Aaliyah admitted in court documents that she had lied about her age. In May 1997, she filed suit in Cook County seeking to have all records of the marriage expunged.
