Did R. Kelly get charged for Aaliyah?

A marriage certificate released by Vibe magazine revealed that R Kelly and Aaliyah married on August 31, 1994. It was alleged that they married without her parent’s consent.

Aaliyah, who was 15 at the time, was listed as 18 on the certificate whereas Kelly was 27. The marriage was annulled by her parents in 1995, though both Kelly and Aaliyah denied the allegations.

However,  Aaliyah later admitted in court documents that she had lied about her age. In May 1997, she filed suit in Cook County seeking to have all records of the marriage expunged.

Kelly was facing 22 federal criminal charges that involved allegedly abusing 11 girls and women between 1994 and 2018 in his 2021 trial. This illegal marriage was heavily featured in the court case.

In addition, Aaliyah’s expungement request was included in a lawsuit filed by Tiffany Hawkins, who sought to use the marriage documents in her case against Kelly.
