Harvey Evans grew up in Cincinnati and fell in love with theater productions after witnessing a road performance of “Song of Norway.”

He told Playbill that he spent his entire youth hoping to complete high school so he could travel to New York and be in a Broadway production.

Evans arrived in New York in 1955 and quickly made acquaintances with choreographers Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins. “New Girl in Town,” starring Gwen Verdon and choreographed by Fosse, was Evans’ debut Broadway musical as a dancer.

He even altered his identity while filming a brief part in Blake Edwards’ 1962 picture “Experiment in Terror,” starring Glenn Ford and Lee Remick.

He and colleague actress Taffy Paul agreed to reinvent themselves, he as Evans and she as Stefanie Powers.
