Caleb Swanigan was born to Carl Swanigan Sr and Tanya Swanigan and had five siblings from his mother.

His father was a crack cocaine addict from whom he inherited his height and a tendency to obesity. At the time of his death from obesity in 2014, he was 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) and weighed nearly 500 pounds (230 kg).

During Caleb’s childhood, he moved between Utah and Indianapolis and spent time in homeless shelters. By the time he entered eighth grade, he was 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) and 360 pounds (160 kg).

His older brother, Carl Jr, was worried that his brother would keep gaining weight if he continued living with his mother. It was then he called former AAU basketball coach, Roosevelt Barnes.

Barnes agreed to take Caleb in and legally adopted him, raising him as his own son. With Barnes’ help, Caleb’s eating habits were addressed. By the time he finished high school, he had slimmed down to 260 pounds (120 kg).
