Oskar Sala parents: Meet Paul Sala and Annemarie Sala

He was born into a musical home. His mother who was called Annemarie Sala born in 1887 and passed on in the year 1959 worked as a singer, and his father also called Paul Sala born in 1874 and passed on in the year 1932 was also an ophthalmologist who fostered his musical talent.

Sala was born on the 18th of July 1910 in Greiz, Thuringia. Today would have been his 112th birthday. Sala was creating his compositions even in his youth, such as sonatas and songs for violin and piano when he was 14. In 1962, he presented his works for the first time at a concert in his hometown.

His interest in music came as no surprise because his parents were involved in music. At the age of 14 years, he was already composing music for violin and piano, although the first presentation of his work came in 1962 when he was 52 years old.

He was occupied with master class composition studies led by Paul Hindemith when he travelled to Berlin in 1929 to study composition after his Abitur exams during his youthful age from 1895 to 1963. During that time, he was introduced to Friedrich Trautwein, an engineer who had recently invented the Trautonium, one of the earliest electronic instruments.

Sala made it his life mission to develop and learn how to play the synthesizer. He went on to study physics at the University Of Berlin. As a composer and electro-engineer, he was able to develop his instrument called the Mixture-Trautonium. According to Google Doodle, it was similar to the original, although the “sounds and playing techniques were significantly expanded on”.

Some of his musical creations include the Radio Trautonium – the first synthesizer installed without Trautwein’s assistance – and the Concert Trautonium.

He also spent his later years travelling with his wife Käthe and then passed away on the 26th of February 2002 in Berlin.
