Iris Taylor, his father, worked as a dispatcher at the Newport News shipyards, and Clarence, his mother, was a schoolteacher.

Taylor began playing football in the 11th grade. He graduated from Lafayette High School.

He attended the Chapel Hill’s University of North Carolina. He was the University football team’s captain. Taylor was named an “All-American” and “Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year” in 1980.
