George Denis Patrick Carlin was an American stand-up comedian, actor, author, and social critic. He was dubbed “the dean of counterculture comedians” and regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time.

Carlin had a history of heart attacks that spanned three decades including ones in 1978, 1982, and 1991. He also had an arrhythmia which required an ablation procedure in 2003, as well as a significant episode of heart failure in 2005, and two angioplasties at undisclosed dates.

He passed away on June 22, 2008, at the age of 71. The cause of his death was heart failure at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

According to his wishes, he was cremated. His ashes were scattered in front of various New York City nightclubs and over Spofford Lake in New Hampshire.

He was survived by his wife, Sally Wade, and his daughter Kelly Marie Carlin.
