She asked Terry Jacks to accompany her on guitar for certain performances when she was 18 years old, and Craig McCaw later joined on lead guitar.

Before settling on the name Poppy Family, the trio performed under the names Eternal Triangle and Powerline.

Susan and Terry Jacks married in 1967, and McCaw quickly brought in drummer Satwant Singh to the band.
