On August 10, 2019, guards discovered Jeffrey Epstein, an American investor and convicted sex offender, unconscious in his Metropolitan Correctional Center, New York jail cell, where he was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

He was rushed in cardiac arrest to the New York Downtown Hospital, where he was declared dead at 6:39 a.m. after prison guards administered CPR.

The medical examiner in New York City deemed Epstein’s death a suicide by hanging.

On August 11, New York City’s Chief Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson performed a four-hour autopsy on Epstein’s body. The autopsy was observed by pathologist Michael Baden, who was dispatched by Epstein’s attorneys.

Among the injuries identified on Epstein during the autopsy are contusions on both wrists, an abrasion on his left forearm, and severe muscle haemorrhaging in his left shoulder muscle.

However, it was Epstein’s neck injuries that prompted Dr. Baden to bring the official suicide verdict into doubt.

Images from autopsies indicate fractures in the left and right thyroid cartilage.

According to Baden, Epstein‘s neck injury was in the middle of his neck, rather than under his mandibles, as in a conventional hanging.

This, according to Baden, is more prevalent when a person is strangled by a wire or cable. Baden further stated that the wound was considerably thinner than the bedsheet ligature, and that while there was blood on Epstein’s neck, it was not present on the bedsheet ligature.

In reaction to Baden’s assertions, Sampson maintained her determination that Epstein committed suicide.
