Andy Warhol’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe, one of his most famous works, has broken records after selling for over $195 million in New York in less than four minutes of bidding.

Following its auction on Monday(May 9) for $170 million-plus fees, Warhol’s 1964 silk-screen image of Marilyn Monroe, created two years after the film star’s death, has become the most expensive piece of 20th-century art ever sold.
The previous record was set seven years ago when a Picasso painting titled Les Femmes d’Alger was auctioned at a whopping $179.4 million.
According to reliable sources, the buyer was Larry Gagosian, a US art dealer, and gallery owner. Shot Sage Blue Marilyn is one of several portraits of Monroe that Warhol created after her death.
Andy Warhol was nearly killed decades ago by radical feminist Valerie Solanas, who shot him inside his studio. Warhol died of cardiac arrhythmia 37 years ago, at the age of 58, following gallbladder surgery in New York.
