Bette Midler has been chastised on social media for tweeting about the erasure of women in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which some have interpreted as transphobic.
In an apparent allusion to the Roe v. Wade decision, Midler tweeted on Sunday, “WOMEN OF THE WORLD! We are losing control over our bodies, our lives, and even our names! They no longer refer to us as “women”; instead, they refer to us as “birthing persons,” “menstruators,” and even “people with vaginas”! Don’t let them destroy your existence! Every individual on the planet owes you!”
The uproar against Midler comes at a time when several states are attempting to limit transgender people’s access to health care. Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott directed state health officials to begin investigating parents who enable their transgender children to have gender-affirming surgery in February. Abbott called such procedures “child abuse.”
In an attempt to contextualize her original tweet, Midler shared a New York Times opinion piece by Pamela Paul on her Twitter account on Tuesday. According to Paul’s post, “the extreme right and far left have found the one thing they can agree on: Women don’t count.”
In posting the link, Midler tweeted, “PEOPLE OF THE WORLD! My feminist tweet was in reaction to this informative and well-written post.
