Garland Boyette was an American middle linebacker who died on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.
He played for the Houston Oilers from 1966 through 1972 along with Willie Lanier of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Boyette grew raised in Orange and attended Wallace High School.
Boyette went undrafted out of college but was nevertheless picked by the St. Louis Cardinals, where he spent two seasons before departing to play in the Canadian Football League.
Boyette played for the Montreal Alouettes for two seasons and was awarded CFL MVP in 1965. Boyette’s achievements led to a deal with the Oilers in 1966. In 1968 and 1969, he was chosen to the AFL All-Star team.
He was also the first Black man to start as a middle linebacker in professional NFL football.
He played football at Northwestern before transferring to Grambling, where he played alongside his nephew Ernie Ladd.
After finishing his playing career, Boyette worked in management for Southwestern Bell for 28 years until retiring to Missouri City.
He was 82.
