Gilberto Rodriguez the famous leader of the Cali cartel is reported to have passed away on May 31, 2022,  in a prison medical center.

Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela took a deal with the United States government that saw him and his brother Miguel sentenced to thirty years in prison for pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States in exchange for immunity for all their siblings.

Miguel Rodrigues who was arrested and extradited to the United States was the younger brother of Gilberto Rodriguez and was also a high-ranking member of the Cali cartel. Their other siblings Rafaela, Amparo, and Aide Rodriguez all seem to have been running a money-laundering scheme which was later discovered by Colombian investigators.

They accused the siblings and other members of the family who appeared to be uninvolved in the drug business of running a chain of pharmacies and other registered businesses of using that as a front to launder the money obtained from the sale of drugs to make it appear legitimate and then transfer them into various bank accounts.

Eight of the Rodriguez brothers were sentenced to nine years in prison by a Colombian court.
