He subsequently went on to Tougaloo College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1968. In 1972, he received a Master of Science in educational administration from Jackson State University. Thompson worked as a teacher in Madison, Mississippi. He was an alderman in Bolton from 1969 to 1973 and then mayor from 1973 to 1980 before being elected to the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, where he served from 1980 to 1993.
