Rupiah Bwezani Banda was a Zambian politician who was the country’s fourth president from 2008 until 2011.

Bribery allegations tarnished his term, and Zambia’s parliament withdrew Banda’s immunity from prosecution in 2013, allowing investigators to prosecute him for corruption-related offences.

In a special broadcast speech to the country, President Hakainde Hichilema paid tribute to his predecessor. He died on March 11, 2022.

Before being named vice president by then-President Levy Mwanawasa in 2006, Banda held key diplomatic roles under first President Kenneth Kaunda.

He was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and was getting treatment at the time of his death.
