James Mtume was an American Jazz star born in South Philadelphia in 1946.He was the son of saxophonist Jimmy Heath, but was nurtured by stepfather James Forman.

Mtume eventually relocated to the West Coast in the mid-1960s after being awarded a swimming scholarship to Pasadena City College.

He became associated with the Black Power movement and became a member of The Organization Us. He changed his surname to Mtume, which means “messenger” in Swahili around this era.

Mtume followed in the footsteps of his father and stepfather and rose to popularity as a jazz musician after relocating back east. As a percussionist, he performed with jazz icon Miles Davis and his band from 1971 until 1975.

He formed his own R&B-jazz group in 1978. The group comprised of Mtume, Lucas and Tawatha Agee.

Between then until 1986, they published five albums, the most well-known of which was Juicy Fruit.

On January 9, 2022, he died at the age of 76.
