Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who helped end apartheid in South Africa, dies at age 90.

His death was confirmed in a statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

It marked “another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa,” he said.

Tutu was one of the country’s best-known public figures at home and abroad.

Desmond Tutu’s funeral and burial date has been set for January 1, 2022, in Cape Town.

His foundation announced this via a press statement on Sunday, December 26, 2021.

“Arrangements for a week of mourning are still in their infancy,” the foundation confirmed in the press statement, “the funeral of the Archbishop in Cape Town on Saturday, January 1, 2022.”

Desmond Tutu had been hospitalized several times since 2015, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997.

The Archbishop Desmond Tutu Trust said in a statement Sunday; he died peacefully at the Oasis Frail Care Center in Cape Town.
