The funeral of soprano Montserrat Caballé, who died at the age of 85 in Barcelona, was attended by prominent Spanish political and cultural personalities.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Queen Sophia were among those who congregated in Barcelona’s Corts area, the Catalan capital.

Caballé, a native of Barcelona, was laid to rest next to her parents.

Her duet with Freddie Mercury became the 1992 Barcelona Olympics’ theme song.

She became an international sensation over the course of a 50-year career, known for the beauty of her voice and her dramatic interpretation.

Before her international debut in 1965 in Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall in New York, she worked with the Basel Opera and Bremen Opera.

The Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and the Vienna State Opera followed.

The funeral was also attended by representatives from the Gran Teatre Del Liceu, the Barcelona theatre company where she first performed as a youngster.

In 1985, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and in 1993, she underwent therapy for a cardiac condition.
