Clarence Thomas’s path kept altering, but he eventually found a solution.
He was led in completely unexpected directions by a Catholic grandfather, a politician/Episcopal priest, and a journalist.
Is Clarence Thomas Catholic? What is Clarence Thomas religion?
Clarence Thomas, a justice on the Supreme Court, was raised to believe that all people were children of God and that racism in American society was a betrayal of that country’s greatest ideals by Catholic nuns and by the example of his grandparents.
The Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Government, a recent Notre Dame initiative that focuses on discussions and research relating to Catholicism and the common good, invited Thomas, the only other Black Supreme Court justice, to deliver the Tocqueville Lecture.
Thomas has stayed out of the spotlight for almost three decades while serving on the Supreme Court.
After seeing “Created Equal,” a woman in the audience inquired about his status on the Court (because he had served longer than his eight colleagues), and an activist questioned whether he may consider retiring (at 71, he could match peers by serving another two decades).
