Rooney passed after a lengthy struggle with diabetes and end-stage renal failure.
Jay Leno’s debut comedy special, Jay Leno and the American Dream was written by Rooney. In the 1980s, he also worked on Leno’s “What’s my beef?” tirades for Late Night with David Letterman.
“He was the greatest muse a comedian could ever have,” Leno recalled of Rooney, whom he met at The Improv. “I acquired so much information simply just talking to Kevin.” When I first saw him, I thought to myself, ‘Oh my, this guy is very excellent.’ It’s a genuine voice. There are no tricks. He lacked a catchphrase. There was no amusing expression. They threw when circumstances were tough.
