On day two of the Tour de France Femmes, Australia’s Nicole Frain looked to be the cause of a horrific collision that resulted in the withdrawal of Marta Cavalli, one of the race’s leading competitors.
What happened to Nicole Frain?
With about 25 kilometers remaining on the stage from Meaux to Provins, Frain, the national champion of Australia, was quickly re-joining the race in an effort to gain ground.
A prior collision had left a number of cyclists on the ground and greatly slowed the race.
Cavalli was severely injured after Cavalli was struck by Frain, who didn’t appear to notice the traffic jam in front of her. Cavalli lay on the ground for a while on her back.
The Italian ultimately stood back up and resumed riding, but he was soon removed from the race and left sobbing.
Later, her team FDJ-SUEZ-Futuroscope revealed that she had been admitted to the hospital for concussion monitoring.
Cavalli, one of the Tour’s early favorites, finished second at the Giro Donne, one of the largest events for women’s cycling.
