Stephen Gerald Breyer is an American lawyer and judge who has been an associate member of the United States Supreme Court since 1994. He was born on August 15, 1938.

Breyer attended Stanford University before going on to Oxford as a Marshall Scholar and graduating from Harvard Law School in 1964.

After clerking for Associate Justice Arthur Goldberg in 1964–65, Breyer worked as a law professor and speaker at Harvard Law School from 1967 until 1980.  He specialized in administrative law and wrote textbooks that are still in use today.

Before being nominated to the Supreme Court, he worked as a special assistant to the United States Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust and as an assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force in 1973. From 1980 until 1994, he was also a member of the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

President Bill Clinton nominated him to replace retiring Justice Harry Blackmun. Breyer is often regarded as a member of the Court’s liberal side.

On September 4, 1967, he married Joanna Hare.
