Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri was an Egyptian-born physician and theologian who led the terrorist organization al-Qaeda from June 2011 until July 2022. On June 19, 1951, he was born; on July 31, 2022, he died.
He was a top member of Islamist groups that conducted assaults in Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe before succeeding Osama bin Laden. He called on Muslims to abduct Westerners in Muslim nations in 2012.

Ayman al-Zawahiri was born in the Giza area of Cairo, Egypt, to Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri and Umayma Azzam. Both of Al-Zawahiri’s parents were from wealthy households.
Zawahiri’s father, Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri, was born into a big family of doctors and academics in Kafr Ash Sheikh Dhawahri, Sharqi Governorate, with one of his grandfathers being Sheikh Muhammad al-Ahmadi al-Zawahiri (1887–1944). Mohammed Rabie went on to become a surgeon and a pharmacy professor at Cairo University.
Umayma Azzam, Ayman Al-mother, and Zawahiri’s were from a rich, politically engaged family. She was the daughter of Abdel-Wahhab Azzam, a literary scholar who served as president of Cairo University and the founder and inaugural rector of King Saud University.
